Summer = mosquitos = no fun!

I always look forward to summer for various reasons. Mainly it signifies a slower pace with school out and no rushing to and fro to after school activities.

With that said, there are two things I do not enjoy about summer, and that is mosquitos, and the intense heat Texas can experience.

We have been lucky these last couple of summers in that the temperature has been pretty cooperative for around here. I think we only made it over a 100 degrees a handful of times. I also can’t believe we are almost at the end of May, and we are experiencing such sublime weather. Except for the rain…..

Rain is good, rain is a blessing from above. We have been parched, in a record drought,  and will take every inch of rain that comes our way. However, with the rain comes mosquitos.

All the standing water is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos,  and they seem to multiply over night. I feel like I cannot go out in my garden without a buzzing around my hear or smacking them off my body.  Plus, mosquitos are known for carrying West Nile disease.

I don’t want them biting me, but the very last thing I want to do, is spray store bought bug spray all over my body that has DEET and other chemicals in it .

With our skin being our largest pore, I don’t relish it soaking up the toxins, nor do I relish breathing in the fumes from the spray.

So, what is my solution? Homemade bug spray using essential oils. There are several essential oils that naturally repel mosquitos, and though you may have to apply them more often than commercial sprays, you are not soaking up unwanted chemicals.

There are several essential oils that help repel mosquitos, and I have them listed below. I would recommend playing around with different scents to see which one works best for you body.

Personally, I use a blend by Doterra called Terrashield  which is a blend of 13 different essential oils. The 15ml bottle costs $12.67,  which I find is a great bargain when you see how many bottles of spray you can make with it. You can also dab it straight onto your body without diluting it.

DIY Non-toxic Bug Spray

2-4 oz. spray bottle

2:2 ratio of witch hazel to distilled water

10 drops (or more) of Terrashield EO

10 drops of Peppermint EO

Combine all together, shake before using.

The following recipe comes from Mother Earth Living Magazine, and they recommend using 1 cup of 190-proof alcohol from a liquor store, and mix in 2 1/2 tsp. of any combo of the following oils.

Essential Oils
• Basil
• Catnip
• Clove
• Citronella
• Eucalyptus
• Garlic
• Geranium
• Lavender
• Lemon Balm
• Myrrh
• Neem
• Palmarosa
• Peppermint
• Pine
• Rosemary

To purchase Terrashield, or any of the oils listed above, you can click here or contact me directly for a discount.

Essential oils can be bought at the store, online or from a representative of a MLM company. There is a difference. There is therapeutic grade and non-therapeutic grade. Therapeutic grade is safe for body/health use and will be a higher quality of oil.

Remember, you get what you pay for and the less expensive you go, the chances that the oil has been diluted goes up.
